Turning Anger to Joy

Whenever we’re asked about our Courage House program and why it works, one of the biggest components we come back to is our Unique Life Plan (ULP). Providing survivors with the opportunity to create personalized pathways to achieving their dreams makes all the difference in their success.

Imagine a comprehensive plan that offers a nurturing structure for young girls who've been silenced; who've known motivation through fear, not encouragement; and who question their unique purpose. This plan, laced with compassion, includes a unique assessment curriculum helping each girl discover her strengths, passions, and dreams.

Our Unique Life Plan (ULP) is a compass for each girl, leading her from dreams to reality by crafting a distinctive roadmap. This heartwarming journey of transformation is reflected in the lives of numerous survivors who have become a part of our family. As a case in point, immerse yourself in the inspiring narrative of 'Bella', a testament to the power of the ULP.

“Bella” came to Courage House in Tanzania at 15 years old. She had been on the streets and terribly abused with scars on her body to show it. She had so much anger (understandably) to the point where, at times, our staff were afraid of her.

She participated wholeheartedly in counseling and grew spiritually. She became a prayer leader at Courage House and at church. Counseling also helped her overcome her anger and a gentle spirit arose. She tried her best in school, but it was a struggle for her, compounding her shame. She did not give up on her dreams to be successful and decided to be an entrepreneur. She received some vocational training in farming, business, and more.

After Courage House, Bella launched a jewelry business and was later hired at Courage Café, where she worked as a fantastic barista, even winning recognition for a latte art contest in Moshi.

Bella got married, now has two babies, and has decided to focus on her own business full time. She’s a successful business woman, selling over 400 chickens per month to hotels (including Courage Café!), farming, and other endeavors. Recently, she bought her own plot of land! Bella is also one of our Survivor Leaders and mentors our young girls. She is such an inspiration to our staff and girls—we are so proud of her!
